CHED: SUCs to stop offering Senior High School program
State Universities and Colleges (SUCs) might soon stop offering the SHS Program or the Grades 11 and 12 under the K to 12 Basic Education Program according to the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) due to difficulty in maintaining it.
Dr. J. Prospero De Vera III, CHED Chairman, said in an interview, several SUCs have already stopped offering the SHS program due to some concerns in its implementation.
“Many of them have stopped offering the SHS program starting this School Year (SY),” De Vera said. “SUCs are having a hard time maintaining the program – for instance, it’s difficult to look for teachers who are willing to teach senior high,” he said.
According to CHED Chief majority of the public higher education institutions (HEIs) have been struggling when it comes to compensating their faculty members who teach at the SHS level. “The P7,000+ they get per student is not enough to pay the faculty,” he said.
Dr. De Vera said that the decision of some SUCs to slowly reduce their senior high sections is also in preparation for high school graduates who will enroll in the universities and colleges following the K to 12 transition.
The SUCs now need the classrooms and faculty for the regular students coming from high school, the chief added.
