DepEd plans to reduce class size to 15 for next school year

The Department of Education (DepEd) is planning to reduce the class size or number of students per class to 15 to 20 in accordance with the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) preventive measures, an official said on Wednesday.

According to a DepEd official, expect that next school year, each classroom will have a smaller class size, to adhere to the social distancing measure. 

"Unang-una, ine-expect natin na pagdating sa school opening natin ngayong pasukan, maliliit 'yung classes natin, primarily dahil kailangan natin 'yung strict social distancing measures," Abram Abanil, Director for Information and Communication Technology Services of DepEd, said in a press media briefing.

Abanil also said that there may only be 15 to 20 students in every class in the upcoming school opening.

"We expect na magkakaroon lang ng mga 15 to 20 students bawat klase pagdating nitong upcoming school opening," said Abanil.

Abanil said that DepEd will provide alternative modes of learning for grade school and high school students with the use of technology and paper-based activities.

"Ang ibang mga bata, ine-expect natin na du'n na sila sa bahay," Abanil said.

"Hindi naman sila nandu'n lang bahay para walang gawin; kailangan din silang mapagtuloy sa kanilang mga pag-aaral," Abanil added.

President Rodrigo Duterte earlier has approved the recommendation of the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF-EID) to move the opening of School Year (SY) 2020-2021 to September in areas placed under General Community Quarantine (GCQ) due to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic.
