Official Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELCs)
The Official Copy of Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELCs) is set to roll out a revised curriculum this coming school year (SY) 2020-2021, which highlights the streamlining of the K to 12 curriculum to the most “essential” learning competencies.
The MELCs were provided by the Department of Education (DepEd) as the primary reference for all Schools, Schools Division Offices (SD0s) and Regional Offices (R0s) in determining and implementing learning delivery approaches that are suited to the local context and diversity of learners, while adapting to the challenges posed by COVID-19.
As part of DepEd’s Basic Education Learning Continuity Plan (BE-LCP) LCP, the K to 12 curriculum had been streamlined to 5,689 MECLs from the original 14,171, or a reduction by 60 percent.
Schools are hereby instructed to refer to the MELCs in creating learning activity sheets, self-learning modules, and other instructional materials. Moreover, schools are enjoined to adhere to the content of the MELCs and refrain from creating a new list of learning competencies for different learning areas.
