Department of Education (DepEd) Secretary Leonor Briones said Wednesday the scheduled opening of classes on Aug. 24 will push through, saying the country’s regions are “fully prepared” despite apprehensions on the government’s push for blended learning.

Briones, in a meeting with President Rodrigo Duterte and other Cabinet officials, said the DepEd could no longer go beyond Aug. 24 for the opening of classes.

“Hindi kami nagbabago sa aming stand Mr. President na maximum August 24 talaga. Kasi sa batas, last day of August,” she told President Duterte.

(We didn’t change our stand Mr. President because the maximum is Aug. 24 Under the law, last day of August.)

She also insisted that DepEd would not change its schedule for the start of classes even as the coronavirus pandemic persists.

“So August 24 magbubukas na ng klase, whatever form it is. Ngayon, handang-handa na ang mga regions,” Briones said.

(On Aug. 24, classes will open, whatever form it is. The regions are fully prepared.)

Under the law, classes should begin anytime between June and August.

The extended enrollment in public schools also ended on Wednesday, July 15 with the DepEd reporting over 20 million enrollees.

For the upcoming school year, DepEd had said it would use printed modules, online instruction, and radio and television as education delivery modes.
