The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) on Wednesday said it told colleges and universities to move school activities that require physical presence and interaction of students to the second semester as the threat of the coronavirus pandemic lingers.

During a meeting with President Rodrigo Duterte and other top Cabinet officials, CHED Chair Prospero De Vera III said colleges should reschedule activities that require physical presence to a later time as the Philippines continues to see a rising number of COVID-19 infections.

“Uutusan natin ‘yung mga universities na ‘yung lahat nung subjects na may OJT, internship etcetera, i-reschedule nila sa second semester,” De Vera told the President.

(We will order universities that their subjects with on-the-job trainings, internship, etcetera that these should be rescheduled to the second semester.)

CHED said the first semester should be limited only to regular lectures, and discussion of theories particularly for subjects that do not require the physical presence of students.

“Sa first sem, ang ituturo lang lahat ng mga klase na regular na pwede lectures, theoretical dun sa first sem. Imo-move on natin sa second semester yung kailangan pupunta [ang mga estudyante],” he said.

(For the first sem, all of the lectures and theories that can be taught will be discussed. We will move activities that require physical presence to the second semester.)

Colleges and universities have a freehand on the schedule for the opening of their academic year.
