MANILA, Philippines — The Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) will offer two loan programs starting next month to help government workers pay for tuition and purchase computers for distance learning amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Finance Secretary Carlos Dominguez III announced on Wednesday that the loans aim to help Filipinos adjust to the changes in education brought by the COVID-19 crisis. With the shift to distance learning and online classes, government employees now have access to financial assistance to support their families' educational needs.

GSIS Computer Loan Program: P30,000 for Laptops and Desktops

Starting August 1, the GSIS will offer a P30,000 computer loan program for the purchase of a desktop computer or laptop. This initiative is designed to help active GSIS members acquire the necessary devices for distance and online learning, which have become the new normal in education.

"Next month, GSIS will introduce a new P30,000 computer loan program to its active members to help them purchase a laptop or desktop in light of the new normal of holding distance or online classes," Dominguez said during a forum with economic managers for President Rodrigo Duterte's penultimate State of the Nation Address this month.

The loan is payable in three years with a 6-percent interest rate, making it an affordable option for government workers who need to equip their households with reliable technology for education and work-from-home arrangements.

GSIS Education Loan Program: Up to P100,000 Per School Year

Another loan program will be offered starting September 17 for GSIS members to help them pay for the education of their student-beneficiaries. The loan is capped at P100,000 per academic school year for nominated student-beneficiaries of GSIS members.

This education loan aims to ease the financial burden on government employees who are supporting children or dependents through school. The loans can be paid five years from the initial loan take-out, providing flexible repayment terms for borrowers.

Key Features of the GSIS Loan Programs

  • Computer Loan Program: P30,000 for laptop or desktop purchase
  • Interest Rate: 6% per annum
  • Repayment Period: 3 years
  • Education Loan Program: Up to P100,000 per academic school year
  • Repayment Period: 5 years
  • Eligibility: Active GSIS members
  • Purpose: Tuition fees and computer purchase for distance learning

Why These Loans Are Important

The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly disrupted the education sector, forcing schools to adopt distance learning and online classes. Many Filipino families struggled to adapt due to the lack of necessary devices and financial resources. The GSIS loan programs aim to address these challenges by providing accessible and affordable financial assistance to government employees.

"The loan aims to help Filipinos adjust to the changes in education brought by the COVID-19 crisis," Dominguez emphasized. By supporting government workers, the program indirectly benefits students who rely on their parents' or guardians' GSIS membership for educational support.

How to Apply for GSIS Loans

Active GSIS members who wish to avail of these loan programs should watch for official announcements from GSIS regarding application procedures, requirements, and deadlines. Members are encouraged to prepare the necessary documents, including:

  • Proof of GSIS membership
  • Valid government-issued identification
  • Proof of enrollment or tuition fee assessment for the education loan
  • Quotation or receipt for computer purchase
  • Accomplished loan application forms

For more details, GSIS members may visit the official GSIS website or contact their nearest GSIS branch office.

Supporting Government Workers and Their Families

The GSIS loan programs are part of the government's broader efforts to support public servants during the pandemic. By providing financial assistance for education and technology, the government aims to ensure that the children of government workers can continue their studies despite the challenges of the new normal.
