The Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) will offer two loan programs starting next month to help government workers pay for tuition, and to purchase computers for distance learning during the coronavirus pandemic.
Finance Secretary Carlos Dominguez III on Wednesday said the loan aims to help Filipinos adjust to the changes in education brought by the COVID-19 crisis.
Starting Aug. 1, the GSIS will offer a P30,000 computer loan program for the purchase of a desktop computer or a laptop. The loan is payable in three years with a 6-percent interest rate, Dominguez said.
“Next month, GSIS will introduce a new P30,000 computer loan program to its active members to help them purchase a laptop or desktop in light of the new normal of holding distance or online classes,” he said during a forum with economic managers for President Rodrigo Duterte’s penultimate State of the Nation Address this month.
Another loan program will meanwhile be offered on Sept. 17 for GSIS members too to help them pay for the education of their student-beneficiaries.
The loan is capped at P100,000 per academic school year for the nominated student-beneficiaries of GSIS members, Dominguez said.
The loans can be paid five years from the initial loan take out, the finance secretary added.
